Cancer protein 'can be disarmed'

Notch is known to be an important protein in development, maintaining undifferentiated proliferating cells.The gene responsible for manufacturing Notch protein is often damaged or mutated in patients with a form of blood cancer known as T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) leading to constitutive Notch activation and uncontrolled cell proliferation. Scientists have developed a technique to disrupt Notch's function and, when tested in mice, this technique has shown to limit the growth of cancer cells.
